Does my younger brother need surgery for a clubfoot?

Why is the penis crooked? Many teenagers or young men have doubts or worries about whether their penis has a standard appearance and shape.

Because some men’s penises, when erect, tilt either to the left or right; some curve inward toward the body, some bend downward, etc., leading to the misconception that their penis is abnormal or non-standard and different from others.

A crooked penis is a normal occurrence and may depend on how the penis is positioned when wearing underwear, but it can also be congenital or develop later.

If it is erect without pain, surgery is not necessary. However, if the curvature is more than 30 degrees or causes pain, you should see a doctor for further treatment.

How to treat a crooked penis

The treatment methods for a crooked penis are as follows:

  • Penile injections: Currently, only Clostridium Histolyticum has been approved by the FDA for treating this condition. It is approved for men with a penile curvature greater than 30 degrees during erection to break down collagen buildup.
  • Medication such as Colchicine and Tamoxifen.
  • Surgery may be suitable for those with severe penile abnormalities that make sexual intercourse difficult.

Surgical methods that may be used include:

  • Suturing the side opposite the curve to straighten the penis.
  • Removing hardened fibrous tissue and closing the area with various types of tissue.
  • Implanting a penile prosthesis.

Surgical steps to correct a crooked penis

  • Clean and prepare the penis for surgery.
  • An anesthesiologist administers general anesthesia (procedure performed at Le Luck Hospital).
  • The doctor makes an incision at the base of the glans, separates blood vessels and nerves from the urethra, then uses suturing techniques on the side opposite the curve to straighten the penis.
  • The doctor tests the erection; if slight curvature remains, additional suturing may be done.
  • Close the incision and check for proper healing.

Pre-surgery preparation

  • Schedule an appointment in advance to consult with the doctor before the procedure.
  • Inform the doctor about your medical history, allergies, chronic diseases, and all current medications and supplements.
  • If you have had any procedures or surgeries such as circumcision, injections of foreign substances, fillers, or any penile procedures, inform the doctor beforehand.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or other medications affecting blood clotting like sinus medications or cough syrups containing these substances, vitamins, fish oil, herbs, and all supplements at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 72 hours before surgery.
  • Get adequate rest of 8-10 hours before surgery.
  • On the day of surgery, bring at least one companion.

Post-surgery care

  • Schedule a dressing removal 3-5 days after surgery. If unable to visit the clinic, send photos updating the condition before dressing removal.
  • After dressing removal for 7 days, you may shower but avoid soap on the wound area.
  • Wear comfortable underwear for the first 2-3 days.
  • If you feel pain or discomfort, apply cold compresses or take pain medication prescribed by the doctor.
  • Keep the wound dry and apply a thin layer of ointment on the wound area.
  • Clean the wound with saline solution; do not use alcohol.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse, masturbation, and activities that put pressure on the penis, such as cycling, for 1-2 months.
